If your usage hasn't changed but your water bill has, that's one of the clearest early indicators of a hidden leak. Compare a few months of bills side by side — a sustained jump, rather than a one-off, is worth investigating.
A damp patch that appears with no obvious external cause (like a leaking gutter) often means water is escaping from pipework inside the wall or floor above. Even small, slow leaks can leave a visible tide-mark or cause paint and wallpaper to bubble and peel over time.
Persistent damp conditions from a slow, hidden leak create ideal conditions for mould and mildew, which often produces a musty smell well before any visible staining appears — particularly in built-in cupboards, under sinks, or in rooms above where pipework runs.
Timber flooring that feels soft or springy underfoot, laminate that's started to lift at the seams, or discolouration on flooring near a bathroom or kitchen can all indicate water is getting into the subfloor from below.
This is the most reliable DIY check. Turn off every tap and water-using appliance, note your meter reading, then check again after an hour without using any water. If the reading has changed, water is escaping somewhere in the system between the meter and your taps.
