We cover every EH4 neighbourhood along the Queensferry Road corridor: Craigleith and Blackhall, Ravelston, Davidson’s Mains around Quality Street, the larger houses of Barnton and Cammo, down to Cramond village and the River Almond, and across to Silverknowes, Clermiston, Drylaw and Muirhouse. We reach the area from Leith along Ferry Road, so we can get to the Western General side of Crewe Road as easily as Whitehouse Road.
Homes here are generally larger than in the city centre, and that changes the typical jobs. Barnton, Cramond and Ravelston have many detached and semi-detached houses with several bathrooms, system or regular boilers and a hot water cylinder rather than a simple combi. Blackhall, Davidson’s Mains and Silverknowes are mostly 1920s–30s bungalows and semis. Clermiston, Drylaw and Muirhouse are mainly post-war houses and flats, some recently rebuilt. Mature gardens and trees are everywhere, which is why outside drain problems come up so often.
No hot water from a cylinder system. In Barnton and Cramond houses the fault is often a zone valve, a pump, a cylinder thermostat or the boiler itself. Our Gas Safe engineers test each part of the system and fix the actual cause, whether that is on the boiler or on the cylinder side.
Tree roots and outside drains. Older clay drain runs under mature gardens in Blackhall, Ravelston and Cramond are prone to root ingress and cracked joints. If a gully or manhole keeps flooding, we clear it with high-pressure jetting and can carry out a CCTV drain survey to show exactly what is happening underground.
Low shower pressure and pump failures. Tank-fed systems in larger houses often rely on a shower pump. When it fails or starts cycling, the shower goes cold or weak. We repair or replace pumps and look at better options where the mains pressure allows.
Frozen outside taps and garage pipes. Detached houses with garages, utility rooms and outside taps have more exposed pipework. In a hard frost these freeze and split first. We thaw and repair them, and fit isolation valves so the outside tap can be drained down each winter.
Close your main stopcock. In older bungalows it is usually under the kitchen sink. In larger houses it may be in a utility room, cellar or garage. If a hot water cylinder is leaking, switch off the boiler and any immersion heater. For an outside drain overflowing towards the house, stop using water indoors until we arrive.
